Job Summary:

The Director of Stewardship and Development is responsible for developing and implementing the stewardship and development strategy through Christian discipleship for The Riverside Church.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads the creation and implementation of fundraising strategy in partnership with the Stewardship Committee, Senior Leadership and Church Council.
  • Leads and manages the Riverside Church’s overall stewardship and development efforts to raise an annual giving of $2 million.
  • Cultivates and nurtures relationships with current and prospective funders and supporters, especially donors. .
  • Formulates campaign themes, drafts campaign calendar, and writes publicity material. 
  • Plans all fundraising and development efforts in conjunction with the Stewardship & Development Committee, including follow-up and related reporting.
  • Plans and oversees all planned giving and stewardship education efforts of the Church and its congregation.
  • Identifies potential contributors to special project funds and ongoing operations through examination of past records, individual and corporate contacts, and knowledge of community.
  • Generates, educates and administers development/stewardship policies, procedures and systems.
  • Researches public and private grant agencies and foundations to identify potential sources of funding for community service and other projects.
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of grant proposals for funds from private foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to the Stewardship Committee, other lay leaders, church volunteers and colleagues with regard to all stewardship and development efforts.
  • Develops public relations materials, in conjunction with Riverside’s Communications Department, to promote all aspects and options of Riverside’s stewardship and development program.
  • Organizes direct mail campaign to reach potential contributors.
  • Oversees, manages and maintains the Church’s membership and affiliate database (through the use of the Blackbaud software program).  This is accomplished in coordination with the Secretary of the Church Corporation and Membership, Care and Parish Life
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of people engaged in maintaining records of contributors and grants and preparing letters of appreciation to be sent to contributors.
  • Creates donor recognition program.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Minimum of 8+ years of demonstrated development experience preferably for a large multifaceted no-for-profit organization, preferably a religious institution
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and persuade others to accomplish challenging goals & objectives
  • Ability to behave within the Staff Vision of The Riverside Church – “Love is our Aim and Mutual Respect our Pathway”.
