Joo Sun Ae Appointed Visiting Professor of Spirituality and Spiritual Formation at New York Theological Seminary

New York Theological Seminary (NYTS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Joo Sun Ae, NYTS graduate (class of 1958), as Visiting Professor of Spirituality and Spiritual Formation for the fall semester 2011.  Professor Joo is highly regarded as one of the most important Korean church leaders of the past half-century.  Born in Pyongyang, North Korea, she graduated from Jeongeui Girls’ High School in Pyongyang and completed two years of study in the Women’s Program at Pyongyang Theological Seminary in North Korea before attending the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary in Seoul, South Korea, and then Yeungnam University in Daegu, South Korea, where she graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1953.  Three years later she moved to New York to attend Biblical Seminary (now New York Theological Seminary).

After graduating from Biblical Seminary with the Masters of Religious Education degree in 1958, Joo returned to Seoul where she served first on the staff of Seoul Women’s University, then as Instructor in Soongsill University, in Seoul.  In 1966 she became the first women to hold an appointment on the theological faculty of the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary in Seoul.  For the next 23 years she taught religious education and spiritual formation to a generation of Korean Presbyterian Church leaders.  From 1984 to 1987 she also served as the President of the Graduate School of that institution.  By the time she retired in 1989, Professor Joo had become the spiritual mentor to a generation of distinguished pastors serving Korean churches throughout the world.  Following her retirement she continued to lecture and teach at several institutions, including Torch Trinity Graduate School of Theology in Seoul where she is currently Chair Professor.  She is the recipient of numerous honors and degrees, including an honorary doctorate, and since 2005 has served as the Director of the North Korean Refugees Center in Seoul, an organization that provides assistance to defectors and refugees from the North.  On May 26, 2011 at a special ceremony held at Myung Sung Presbyterian Church in Seoul, NYTS bestowed upon Professor Joo its Maria Kim Award for Outstanding Women’s Global Leadership.

영성과 성령의 형성를 갖춘 주선애 교수님을 뉴욕신학대학에서 방문교수로 임명.

뉴욕신학대학(New York Theological Seminary)에서는 2011년 가을 학기부터 1958 년도에 졸업한 영성과 성령의 형성을 갖춘 주선애 교수님을 모교 방문교수로 임명 함을 발표합니다.  주선애 교수님은 지난 반세기동안 한국교회 지도자 가운데서 가장 중요한 분중에 한 분으로 지금까지 높이 평가되고 있습니다. 북한 평양에서 출생해서 정의여자 고등학교를 졸업하시고, 평양 신학대학를 졸업 하시었습니다. 1953년에는 대구에 있는 영남대학에서 학사학위를 받으시고, 그 후에 서울의 장로 교 신학대학을 졸업 하시었습니다. 3년후에 뉴욕으로 오셔서 그 당시 Biblical Seminary (현재 NYTS)성서신학교에 입학을 했습니다.

성서신학교에서 종교교육학 석사과정을 마치신 후에, 서울에 돌아 가셔서 서울여 자 대학교에서 처음 교편을 잡으시고, 기독교 교육을 위해 숭실대학교에도 출강을 하시었습니다. 1966 년 그는 여성 최초로 장로교 신학대학교의 신학 정교수가 되시 었습니다. 지난 23년 동안 주 교수님은 한국장로교 지도자 세대들에게 종교교육과 성령의 형성을 가르쳤습니다. 또한 1984년부터 1987년까지는 장로교 신학대학원 원장으로서 재직을 하셨습니다. 1989년 은퇴 하기까지 교수님은 전국에 걸처 한국 교회을 섬기는 우수한 목사들에게 영적인 스승이 되었습니다. 은퇴 후에도 현재 서 울에있는 Torch  Trinity 신학 대학원의 주임 교수직을 포함해서, 여러 신학대학에 강의를 계속하고 계십니다. 주 교수님은 명예박사학위를 비롯한 자랑스러운 여러 개의 상과 학위를 받으셨습니다. 2005년 부터는 탈북한 난민을 돕는 북한 탈북자 센터의 이사장으로 봉사하고 계십니다. 금년 5월 26일에는 서울에 김삼환 목사님 이 시무하시는 명성장로교회에서 뉴욕신학대학에서 탁월한 전국 여성지도자에게 수여 되는 “Maria Kim Award” 에 주선애 교수님이 상을 받게 되었습니다.

주 교수님은 금년 9월 한달 동안 뉴욕에 계시면서, 뉴욕신학대학의 후배들을 위한 집중 강의를 하시게 되며, 새 학기부터 전문신학을 시작하는 NYTS의 가을학기 수 양회에 참석하시게 됩니다. 또한 여러 교회에서 설교를 하시게 되며, 아시아 기독교 여성협회를 방문하시게 되고, 목회자 회의에도 하루 참석하시게 됩니다. 평생을 해 오신 겉과 같이, 뉴욕에 있는 몇개의 한국교회 새벽 예배에도 참석할 것 입니다. 9  월 한달 기간에 주 교수님과 약속이나 계회을 알고 싶어하시는 분이나, 뉴욕신학대 학교에 관해서 알고 싶어하시는 분은 다음으로 연락 하시기 바랍니다.
