Hope Rises in Far Rockaway in the Aftermath of Sandy

Rev. Darren Ferguson (Coordinator of Church Relations and current Doctor of Ministry candidate at NYTS) has found himself at the front lines of recovery in Far Rockaway, Queens, in the aftermath of Sandy. While others are working to restore power, he is working to restore hope. The church he serves as pastor, Mount Carmel Baptist Church, is at the center of relief efforts in the community. Both Mount Carmel Church and Rev. Ferguson’s own home were severely damaged by Sandy, making them examples of “wounded healers.” As he says on his Facebook page, Rev. Ferguson has found himself having to be “Prophetic, life giving, humorous, engaging, hope inspiring, sobering, angering, loving and Christ-centered.”

This Thanksgiving Rev. Ferguson will have a tent set up on the lot next to the church, with a generator running and lots of food. Thanksgiving dinner will be served to the community at 2 pm. The entire NYTS community continues to keep Rev. Ferguson and others from the coastal areas of New York and New Jersey who were so affected by this storm in prayer through this holiday season.
