Pastoral Care: An Essential Aspect In the Practice of Ministry

rradilloSeminary education is the bedrock in which the practice of ministry is rooted.  Biblical studies offer a new understanding of the Scriptures and biblical exegesis and hermeneutics become essential interpretative tools to understand the biblical texts. Theological studies demand that the student  engage in a profound process of discernment with the ability to integrate reflection and criticism with praxis. History widens the worldview and scope of ministry by providing an invaluable appreciation for the Christian traditions and its contribution to the present history being written. Community analysis effectively prepares seminarians to take seriously the context of communities and church.

One crucial aspect of a New York Theological Seminary education is the richness of elective courses that encompass a number of programs.  One of these programs is the Pastoral Care Specialist for Parish Ministry.  This program is open to M.Div. students and non-matriculated persons who want to create healthy congregations, develop pastoral care skills and develop an informed and responsible pastoral care practice based on the body of knowledge available in this field.  Pastoral Care is a crucial aspect in the overall educational process and ministerial practice.  God calls us to be fully equipped as transformational holistic leaders.

This summer, NYTS is offering five Pastoral Care courses that constitute the main body of knowledge for the Pastoral Care Specialist Program; three other courses will be offered during the school year.  Persons may choose to do the full program or choose those courses that will enhance their skills and provide them with a deeper knowledge for effective leadership.
