Pat Robertson Receives the Vernon M. Dougherty Distinction in Ministry Award for 2009

Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and of Regent University, and New York Theological Seminary graduate (class of 1959) received The Vernon M. Dougherty Distinction in Ministry Award during the Seminary’s 109th commencement celebration held in The Riverside Church in Manhattan on May 16, 2009.  It was the 50th anniversary of Dr. Robertson’s graduation from The Biblical Seminary in New York, the name by which New York Theological Seminary was previously known.

In his remarks before the 170 graduates and approximately 2,000 additional guests who were gathered for the service in Riverside, Dr. Robertson recalled the formative impact the experience at Biblical Seminary had played in his life.  He noted in particular the importance of the integration of ministry, prayer, and the study of the Bible at the Seminary.  After graduating, he said, he and his family had moved to Brooklyn to work in urban ministry for a year.  They later moved to Virginia where he subsequently founded the Christian Broadcasting Network and Regent University.

In presenting the award, President Irvin noted that through his media ministry Pat Robertson has arguably done more than any living person on earth to increase awareness globally of the place of prayer and praise in daily Christian life.  New York Theological Seminary is also proud that one of its own graduates founded and continues to head Regent University.  “Dr. Robertson, welcome home,” said President Irvin.
